This?J-Day?panel on doing journalism when your co-workers are far away features Jason Horn, of Liquor.com;?Hampton Stephens, of World Politics Review;?and Verna Gates, of Reuters International.

Jason Horn
Jason Horn is assistant editor of Liquor.com, co-founder of the FoodBlogSouth food-blogging conference, blogger at TheMessyEpicure.com, and a freelance writer. He?s been obsessed with food since he learned the secret ingredient to his dad?s chicken soup at age 5, and he?s been obsessed with writing since he followed a high-school crush to a literary magazine meeting.

Hampton Stephens
Hampton Stephens is the founder and publisher of World Politics Review, an information service that provides news and analysis on international affairs. Hampton has written news and analysis for Air Force magazine, the Boston Globe and Foreign Policy, among other publications, and has appeared as a commentator on military and foreign affairs on various broadcast and cable news outlets.

Verna Gates
Verna Gates reports for Reuters International News Service, the world?s largest news organization, with 1 billion readers and 417,000 media outlets around the planet. Her career began as one of the original 50 employees of CNN who worked to launch the network. She worked for CNN as a writer/producer for four years and also reported for TIME Magazine. Over the years, she has covered some of the nation?s top stories and won numerous national awards for her articles. In 2009, she was awarded the Communicator of Achievement Award, a lifetime achievement award from the National Federation of Presswomen.

Sponsored by the department of journalism in the University of Alabama?s?College of Communication & Information Sciences, the annual J-Day program highlights the careers available to young journalists by bringing in guest speakers to discuss their work and the industry in general.

This year?s J-Day will take place Thursday, March 29 in?Reese Phifer Hall. All sessions are free and open to the public.
