Dramatic change spotted on a faraway planetPublic release date: 28-Jun-2012 [ | E-mail | Share ]

Astronomer Alain Lecavelier des Etangs (CNRS-UPMC, France) and his team used Hubble to observe the atmosphere of exoplanet HD 189733b [1] during two periods in early 2010 and late 2011, as it was silhouetted against its parent star [2]. While backlit in this way, the planet's atmosphere imprints its chemical signature on the starlight, allowing astronomers to decode what is happening on scales that are too tiny to image directly. The observations were carried out in order to confirm what the team had previously seen once before in a different planetary system: the evaporation of an exoplanet's atmosphere (heic0403 - http://www.spacetelescope.org/news/heic0403/).
HD 189733b has a blue sky, but that's where the similarities with Earth stop. The planet is a huge gas giant similar to Jupiter, but it lies extremely close to its star, just one thirtieth the distance Earth is from the Sun. Even though its star is slightly smaller and cooler than the Sun, this makes the planet's climate exceptionally hot, at above 1000 degrees Celsius, and the upper atmosphere is battered by energetic extreme-ultraviolet and X-ray radiation. As such, it is an excellent candidate to study the effects of a star on a planetary atmosphere.
"The first set of observations were actually disappointing," Lecavelier says, "since they showed no trace of the planet's atmosphere at all. We only realised we had chanced upon something more interesting when the second set of observations came in."
The team's follow-up observations, made in 2011, showed a dramatic change, with clear signs of a plume of gas being blown from the planet at a rate of at least 1000 tonnes per second. "We hadn't just confirmed that some planets' atmospheres evaporate," Lecavelier explains, "we had watched the physical conditions in the evaporating atmosphere vary over time. Nobody had done that before."
The next question was: why the change?
Despite the extreme temperature of the planet, the atmosphere is not hot enough to evaporate at the rate seen in 2011. Instead the evaporation is thought to be driven by the intense X-ray and extreme-ultraviolet radiation from the parent star, HD 189733A, which is about 20 times more powerful than that of our own Sun. Taking into account also that HD 189733b is a giant planet very close to its star, then it must suffer an X-ray dose 3 million times higher than the Earth.
Evidence to support X-ray driven evaporation comes from simultaneous observations of HD 189733A with the Swift satellite [3], which, unlike Hubble, can observe the star's atmosphere-frying X-rays. A few hours before Hubble observed the planet for the second time, Swift recorded a powerful flash of radiation coming from the surface of the star, in which the star briefly became 4 times brighter in X-rays.
"X-ray emissions are a small part of the star's total output, but it is the part that it is energetic enough to drive the evaporation of the atmosphere," explains Peter Wheatley (University of Warwick, UK), one of the co-authors of the study. "This was the brightest X-ray flare from HD 189733A of several observed to date, and it seems very likely that the impact of this flare on the planet drove the evaporation seen a few hours later with Hubble."
X-rays are energetic enough to heat the gas in the upper atmosphere to tens of thousands of degrees, hot enough to escape the gravitational pull of the giant planet. A similar process occurs, albeit less dramatically, when a space weather event such as a solar flare hits the Earth's ionosphere, disrupting communications. While the team believes that the flash of X-rays is the most likely cause of the atmospheric changes they saw on HD 189733b, there are other possible explanations. For example, it may be that the baseline level of X-ray emission from the star increased between 2010 and 2011, in a seasonal process similar to the Sun's 11-year sunspot cycle.
Regardless of the details of exactly what happened to HD 189733b's atmosphere, which the team hope to clarify using future observations with Hubble and ESA's XMM-Newton X-ray space telescope, there is no question that the planet was hit by a stellar flare, and no question that the rate of evaporation of the planet's atmosphere shot up.
This research has relevance not only for the study of Jupiter-like planets. Several recent discoveries of rocky "super Earths" near their parent stars are thought to be the remnants of planets like HD 189733b, after the complete evaporation of their atmospheres. [4]

The international team of astronomers in this study consists of
A. Lecavelier des Etangs (Institut d'astrophysique de Paris, CNRS, UPMC, France), V. Bourrier (Institut d'astrophysique de Paris, CNRS, UPMC, France), P. J. Wheatley (Department of Physics, University of Warwick, UK), H. Dupuy (Institut d'astrophysique de Paris, CNRS, UPMC, France), D. Desert (Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, USA), R. Ferlet (Institut d'astrophysique de Paris, CNRS, UPMC, France) and D. K. Sing (Astrophysics Group, School of Physics, University of Exeter, UK).
The study is presented in a paper entitled "Temporal variations in the evaporating atmosphere of the exoplanet HD189733b" which will be published in a forthcoming issue of Astronomy and Astrophysics.
[1] HD 189733b is a 'hot Jupiter' exoplanet orbiting the star HD 189733A, located around 60 light-years from Earth. Hot Jupiters are gas giant planets which orbit close to their parent stars. HD 189733b lies very close to its star, at only one thirtieth the distance between the Sun and the Earth, meaning it experiences temperatures of above 1000 degrees Celsius and orbits its parent star every 53 hours. It has around 10% more mass than Jupiter. Even Mercury, the closest planet to the Sun, is around 10 times further away. The planet has a hazy atmosphere made up primarily of hydrogen, which scatters short wavelengths of light, meaning it would appear blue. Its star, HD 189733A, is around 80% of the mass of the Sun, just over three quarters its diameter, around 800 degrees Celsius cooler and slightly redder in colour. It is part of a double star system with the star HD 189733B (not to be confused with the planet, HD 189733b), however this companion star is several thousand times further from HD 189733A, and much smaller than HD 189733A, and so has little or no effect on the planet.
[2] This method of observing exoplanets is known as the transit method, as it takes advantage of the planet transiting across the face of its parent star. Only a small fraction of exoplanets can be studied using the transit method, as it relies on the planet's orbit being seen perfectly side-on from our perspective. However, for those planets where it is possible, observing transits is an extremely powerful tool. These observations were carried out using Hubble's Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph, an instrument which, much like a prism, splits light into its constituent colours. The relative brightnesses of different wavelengths of light carry a lot of information including the fingerprint of the types, properties, abundances and even motion of gases it has passed through. In this case, the team were looking for hydrogen gas (the predominant component of HD 189733b's atmosphere) being blown off the atmosphere.
[3] The Swift satellite is an international mission bringing together NASA, the UK Science and Technology Facilities Council and the Italian Space Agency (ASI). Its primary purpose is detecting and studying gamma-ray bursts, but its X-ray and ultraviolet/optical telescopes are also used for other astronomical observations.
[4] Super Earths are a class of rocky exoplanets that are similar in composition to the Earth, but with a few times the mass. Super Earths within their stars' habitable zones (where temperatures allow liquid water) are considered to be good candidates for life. Exoplanets Kepler-10b and CoRoT-7b are classed as super Earths, but are far too close to their stars to maintain liquid water. They are thought to be the rocky cores of planets similar to HD 189733b which have lost their entire atmospheres to evaporation.

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) ? A senior Hamas leader says one of the militant group's members has been assassinated in Damascus.
Izzat Risheq, a senior Hamas leader, wrote on his Facebook page that Kamal Ghanaja, also known as Nizar Abu Mujahed, was assassinated Wednesday night in the Syrian capital.
Risheq said Hamas was working to identify the assassin and that Ghanaja's blood "shall not be shed in vain." He had no details on how Ghanaja died.
Hamas did not report the assassination on its official media outlets.
Israeli media reported that Ghanaja was shot to death in his home and was a former deputy of slain Hamas operative Mahmoud al-Mabhouh.
Israel is widely suspected of having assassinated Mabhouh in a Dubai hotel in 2010, though it has never confirmed or denied involvement.
STOCKTON, Calif. (AP) ? Officials in Stockton said Tuesday that mediation with creditors has failed, meaning the Central California city is set to become the largest American city ever to declare bankruptcy.
City Manager Bob Deis said officials were unable to reach a deal to restructure hundreds of millions of dollars of debt under a new state law designed to help municipalities avoid bankruptcy.
Monday marked the three-month deadline for negotiations.
"Unfortunately we have no comprehensive set of agreements with our creditors that would eliminate the deficit and avoid insolvency," Deis said at a City Council meeting. He said, however, that the city was still negotiating with some creditors and could reach deals with as many as one-third of them.
"We think Chapter 9 protection is the only choice left. If we get any agreements, those will be honored in Chapter 9," Deis said.
The City Council voted 6-1 Tuesday evening to approve a special bankruptcy budget to plug next year's anticipated $26 million deficit. The budget will suspend debt payments, reduce payments for retiree medical benefits and increase revenue through code enforcement and parking citations, among other steps.
The proposed budget includes no major service reductions, Deis said earlier.
City lawyers would have to file for Chapter 9 protection in court by Friday.
"If we had other choices that would fill the millions of dollars of deficit, we'd be doing that," Mayor Ann Johnston said. "The reality is the gap is so big and so broad, we have to do something this drastic. This is not what we wanted to do but this is what we have a responsibility to do."
The river port city of 290,000 in Central California has seen its property taxes and other revenues decline, while expensive investments and generous retiree benefits drained city coffers.
In the past three years, officials in the city that was slammed by the collapse of the housing market dealt with $90 million in deficits through a series of drastic cuts.
They eliminated one-fourth of the city's police officers, one-third of the fire staff, and 40 percent of all other employees. They also cut wages and medical benefits.
"The whole purpose of filing Chapter 9 is to avoid an uncontrolled chaotic situation," he said. "Bankruptcy provides the equivalent of a pause button. It retains services and provides structure so you don't have a bunch of lawsuits."
In a standing-room only chambers Tuesday, former city employees told council members about their life-threatening medical conditions and said benefit cuts meant they would effectively lose their health insurance.
"For me, bankruptcy might as well be a life sentence," said Gary Jones, a retiree who used to be a police officer in Stockton and said he was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
Other residents complained about plummeting property values, and recurring break-ins and robberies.
"The average citizen will not put up with this. Their home prices have plummeted, they have no jobs, a lot of people are getting fed up so that they have to resort to crime." said Gregory Pitsch, a 22-year-old unemployed resident who made an unsuccessful run for mayor. "I'm asking you to make the right decision, not destroy the property values in this city, which bankruptcy will do."
But city officials say Stockton has run out of options. In recent years, thousands of new homes mushroomed in the city about 80 miles east of San Francisco, part of a suburban housing boom that attracted buyers from the Bay Area and beyond.
When the economy crashed and the construction bubble burst, Stockton was battered by foreclosures and lost income from property taxes and other fees.
Multi-year labor contracts for city workers carrying escalating costs and generous retirement plans added to the burden.
In addition, expensive city investments ? a promenade, sports arena and hotel ? failed to produce economic benefits.
The unemployment rate has doubled in Stockton over the past decade and now hovers around 16 percent. One-fifth of residents live below the poverty line, and the city has twice topped Forbes magazine's list of "America's most miserable cities."
Under a bankruptcy filing, officials would retain power over day-to-day city operations and staffing, but a judge would take over all decisions concerning the city's debts, said Robert Benedetti, professor of political science at the University of the Pacific in Stockton.
The judge would decide which creditors should be paid, how much and in what order. He would make allowances for expenditures needed by the city to function, and it would be up to city officials to decide how to spend that money.
"One of the reasons a city might want to go the bankruptcy route is that they don't want a situation where they have to pay out debts and have to close the police or fire department," Benedetti said. "Filing for Chapter 9 means you're asking the court to protect you against lawsuits from people who hold your debt."
Stockton's bankruptcy would make it the largest city by population to file for Chapter 9 protection, according to Jim Spiotto, a Chicago bankruptcy lawyer who tracks such cases. He said Bridgeport, Conn., was the largest city to file for bankruptcy, which it did in 1991, followed by Vallejo, Calif., which filed in 2008.
Jefferson County in Alabama is the largest local government bankruptcy filing to date in terms of the size of its debt. It occurred in November 2011 and was followed by Orange County, Calif., in 1994.
Experts say the bankruptcy filing, while protecting the city from catastrophe in the short run, should not be seen as Stockton's panacea.
"Bankruptcy won't take away Stockton's underlying financial problems, one of which is the economy, the high unemployment rate and the high foreclosure rate," Benedetti said. "It will take years for them to come out of this."
Stockton was the first city to test a new state mediation law, which is less than 6 months old.
Under the law, municipalities considering bankruptcy must first negotiate behind closed doors with creditors for up to three months, with the goal of settling debts without filing for Chapter 9 protection.
The city spent $3 million on mediation with creditors that included Wells Fargo & Co., the California Public Employees' Retirement System, labor groups, and major bondholders.
Stockton officials have said that even with a bankruptcy, they are optimistic. They point to Vallejo, which emerged from bankruptcy last year.
"Vallejo is leaner, smarter and they've got the confidence of their citizenry," Deis said. "I think Stockton will be doing the same."
Johnston said Tuesday night that the city would eventually come out of the ordeal with a brighter future.
"We will survive," she said. "We will manage to get through this. It will be painful for us, but we will come out stronger."

ASUNCION, Paraguay (AP) ? Paraguay's former president again shifted course on Tuesday, saying he has decided not to attend a South American summit this week where he had planned to protest his dismissal by Congress.
Fernando Lugo has surprised Paraguayans with conflicting announcements since the Senate voted to remove him from office last week. At first, he said he would comply and leave office. Then, he said he would fight the decision and make his case to the region's leaders.
After saying on Monday that he would travel to Mendoza, Argentina, for a summit of the Mercosur trade bloc, on Tuesday Lugo said he had decided against it.
"I don't want the other presidents to feel pressured," Lugo said on television.
South American leaders plan to discuss a regional response to Lugo's dismissal at the meeting, and Mercosur has barred Paraguay's new government from attending.
Ruben Penayo, an ally of the ex-president and a former government spokesman, said that Lugo "wanted the other presidents to have their hands free in order to analyze the situation in Paraguay."
Congress booted Lugo out of office in fast-track proceedings last week triggered by a clash between police and landless protesters in which 17 people died. The Senate found him guilty of "poor performance of his duties," citing a clause in the constitution that leaves wide room for congressional interpretation.
Former Vice President Federico Franco took office as president after Lugo's removal, and intends to serve out the remainder of his term until August 2013. Franco said Tuesday that he wouldn't support pushing up the general elections, which are scheduled for April 21.
Franco told reporters that he is "the one responsible for guaranteeing there will not be a civil war," the state news agency Ipparaguay quoted him as saying. He said he assumed the presidency "to avoid bloodshed."
Pro-Lugo protests that were held during last week's impeachment process, however, largely faded after Lugo was dismissed and left the presidential palace.
The newly appointed foreign minister, Jose Felix Fernandez, had warned on Monday night that Lugo could face legal consequences if he tried to represent the country at the summit. "Paraguay is represented by President Federico Franco, and I don't think it's appropriate for the ex-president to claim responsibilities he no longer has," Fernandez said.
Franco's newly installed government has been trying to counter growing diplomatic repercussions. Ambassadors have been called home for consultations by the governments of Mexico, Ecuador, Colombia, Brazil, Uruguay, Chile and Peru.
Cuba's government said in a statement on Tuesday that it was withdrawing its ambassador and will not recognize any administration in Paraguay that isn't the product of a "legitimate vote" by the country's people. Venezuela and Argentina have taken similar stances, saying they would not have ambassadors in Paraguay under the new government and calling Lugo's ouster a congressional "coup."
Cuban President Raul Castro said the crisis in Paraguay shows that "the coups have returned, but disguised," the government newspaper Granma reported on Tuesday.
Castro recalled the 2009 ouster of President Manuel Zelaya in Honduras, as well was the failed 2002 coup against Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez.
The government of Honduran President Porfirio Lobo, elected five months after Zelaya was whisked out of the country at gunpoint, said Lugo's Senate trial was too short for him to mount a "legitimate defense," though it said it respects Paraguay's right to determine the outcome of its political situation.
Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos said he believes Lugo's dismissal wasn't a coup because the country's constitution lays out the impeachment process under which he was removed.
"Is it a violation of due process for a Senate to adopt rules where only two hours are given to a president to defend himself? The obvious answer is yes. The truth is that what happened here was a violation of due process," Santos said in a speech Monday night.
"What we're going to do is try to have the elections pushed forward ... and seek for democracy to be maintained," Santos said.
Officials from across the region were discussing the situation in Paraguay at a meeting of the Organization of American States in Washington on Tuesday.
U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said on Monday that U.S. officials were "consulting with a broad cross-section of our OAS partners ... and taking stock of what our reaction will be, along with our partners."

It should hardly come as a surprise that folks are spending more and more of their time online on their cellphones, but a new Pew study released today has shed a bit more light on just how common that's becoming. According to the research group, 17 percent of all cellphone users (including those without smartphones) go online "mostly" on their cellphone, while 33 percent primarily use another device, and five percent use both equally -- a hefty 45 percent still don't use their phones to go online at all, though. Not surprisingly, those numbers go up when broken down by those who do at least use the internet occasionally on their phone -- 31 percent of whom go online primarily on their phone -- and there's an even bigger jump when looking at younger users. Among those 18 to 29 who use the internet on their phones, fully 45 percent use their cellphone for most of their online activities. You can find the full report at the source link below.

Since I read Anne-Marie Slaughter?s piece Why Women Still Can?t Have it All last week I?ve been pondering the idea of what it means to truly ?have it all.?
I?m not new at this mommy gig. With a nine-year-old, an almost-five-year old, and a three-year-old, I?m in the trenches, so to speak, but I have a few years of parenting under my belt.
This adds up, roughly, to: 700 time outs, 4,000 spilled sippy cups, 20 car seat installations, and 1,456,792 poopy diapers.
Nevertheless, I know better than to say that I know what I?m doing.
We?ve been through a lot as a family. At least once a week I marvel at the fact that I?ve been able so far to keep the wheels on this bus moving forward and cling to my sanity at the same time. As a mom, I?ve worked full time and part time outside the home. For two years I was a stay-at-home mom with no job, and if you?d asked me back then I?d have told you it was going to stay that way. Then suddenly I found myself working again, very part-time teaching one night a week. And now I?m home full time but also working. Full time? Part time? I haven?t done the math.
All I know is this: in each of these arrangements I?ve failed to achieve it ?all.? If it exists, it has eluded me these past nine years. Here?s the thing, though. I?ve never gone out seeking ?it all.? It?s a myth, like the American Dream or the perfect bra or a brand of nonfat ranch dressing that still tastes good.
There is no such thing as ?it all.?
In Slaughter?s article she describes leaving her position at the State Department in search of that elusive work-family balance, her ?desire to be with my family and my conclusion that juggling high-level government work with the needs of two teenage boys was not possible.?
I?ve never been a high-level government official. I?ve never even been a low-level government official. Come to think of it, I?ve never been any kind of official (unless you count that time I got to hold the flag at the Girl Scouts regional meeting in 5th grade) but do have an understanding about what it means to work hard and do the best by your family at the same time. I don?t think this is an issue that we can isolate to the ranks of the power elite. I know women who work in insurance offices and hospitals and in elementary school libraries who struggle with these same issues.
Across the country there are clerks at Dollar Generals and cashiers at Krogers who fight the rough waters of work and home harmony and who go under every day.
We?re not doing women any favors by promoting this myth that it?s possible to ?have it all.? Can someone please tell me what that even means? My suspicion is that the headline of the article (which was a fascinating and well-written and thought-provoking read) was intended to bait women into another tussle in the Mommy Wars. The cover photo on the issue of The Atlantic in which the article appears depicts a toddler in a briefcase like a cast-off file folder, a minor inconvenience, or the working woman?s latest must-have accessory.
I?ve yet to meet a working mom who regards her child in that way.
I?d be happy if we could stop promoting myths like ?having it all? as a mom because it ends up making us all feel like failures if we don?t measure up. For me, though, for now, a forward-moving bus driven by a mother who?s clinging to her sanity is the best I can do.
I?m not in pursuit of ?having it all,? and maybe that?s why I?m happy with what I have.

Maria Sharapova of Russia poses with the trophy after winning the women's final match against Sara Errani of Italy at the French Open tennis tournament in Paris, Saturday June 9, 2012. Eiffel Tower in the background. (AP Photo/Michel Euler)
Bleacher Report:
Maria Sharapova knows what it feels like to win. She also knows what it feels like to be a champion, having won the 2012 French Open to complete her career Grand Slam (Wimbledon, US Open, French Open and Australian Open).
To put that into perspective, winning a Grand Slam in tennis is like winning the Super Bowl four times in your career. It is something that only 10 women have ever accomplished.
It is truly one of the most incredible feats in tennis history.

How does a Real Housewife hit rock bottom? When she has no one left to hear her whine. That's the place Teresa Guidice found herself in during "Public Displays of Rejection" and we'll recap the crying and cursing in our THG +/- review.
What doesn't Teresa understand? Jacqueline was upset about the magazine saying she was going to jail and confronted her about it. Minus 10 because I don't see what's the big deal.
But Teresa calls it an ambush. I'll give her a plus 3 because once Caroline jumped into the fray it sort of felt like one but that wasn't Jacqueline's intention. Teresa's biggest issue is that she can never see someone else's point of view.
When she runs home to cry on Joe's shoulder he gives his typical response. He tells her she has him and she doesn't need anyone else so move on. Minus 12. It always feels like Teresa's husband is trying to isolate her from the rest of the world. Maybe it's because the less friends she has, the less likely she is to leave his sorry butt.
Of course Joe can't have a conversation without calling someone names. According to him Jacqueline is a dodo bird. Eh. Minus 5. That's lightweight for Joe. Maybe he's distracted by his missing koi.
Is anyone curious what kind of behavioral issues got Joe Guidice sent to therapy at age 11? No? Me neither.
In a surprise move Teresa reaches out to Kathy. Minus 10 to Teresa for trying to play it off like she and Kathy have never had any real problems but maybe it's true if you compare it to the problems Teresa has with everyone else.
Kathy thinks the lunch invite is weird. No Kathy, it's not weird, it's desperation.
Over at the Gorga household Melissa's putting on makeup for her phone interview with Ryan Seacrest. Plus 9 to Joe for for poking fun at her for it. An extra plus 5 for telling his daughter she won't be wearing lipstick again until she's 21. The guy is almost cute when he's in daddy mode.
But minus 7 because couldn't Melissa have taken that phone call in private without Joe and the kids joining in. If she wants to be taken seriously she could work on being a little more professional.
Melissa's song, "On Display" debut's on Seacrest's radio show. Like the song says, it puts her on display and that means taking the good, like the people congratulating her, along with the bad. The bad being the people tweeting that her song sucks.
Gorga throws yet another party for Melissa. Minus 5 because I hated her dress but plus 10 because the Gorga's certainly enjoy a good party, even when they have to throw it themselves.
When the party throws all of the haters into one room you know someone's going to start a fight. Who'd have thought it would be Jacqueline who's start it off.
As Jacqueline stalked over to Teresa I found myself yelling, 'Don't do it!" Minus 8. She didn't listen.
And in a shocking twist, (that's sarcasm for those who missed it), Teresa believes she's the only one hurting and she hasn't done anything wrong. Plus 10 because at least you can count on Teresa to be consistent.
I couldn't help but laugh when Teresa mentions that she and Jacqueline haven't had a fight in their 15 year friendship. No kidding. Generally Jacqueline's a push over and she's always worshiped Teresa. It's about time those rose colored glasses came off.
Teresa calls Jacqueline a psycho bitch but only to the camera, not to her face and says she should have punched her…but it's not her style. Minus 11. No, Teresa prefers cursing and flipping tables.
The f**k you's fly between the former friends and if possible I think things got even worse.
Plus 12 to Melissa who notices the fight in progress and quips about it being, "the mother f**king Teresa show" once again. But she keeps her cool and tries to break it up, only to get dragged into the middle of it.
When confronted by her conversation with Danielle, 2 years ago, Melissa is honest. At the time, she hated Teresa and she used Danielle to get to her. She even apologizes for it. Damn. Plus 15. It's nice to see someone taking the high road for a change.
The sister's in-laws seem to mend fences but will it stick. I'm not optimistic. Teresa's feeling alone now that she's lost Jacqueline. It's why she agreed to go to therapy with her brother. Since she believes the problems are all his, the endeavor is destined for failure.
Any chance I'm wrong? Check back next week to find out.
