Giffords, survivors to commemorate mass shooting

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, other survivors of the Tucson shooting rampage and countless others will come together in the close-knit southern Arizona city on Jan. 8 to commemorate the one-year mark of that tragic day and remember those who died.

    2. $6 billion-a-year ethanol subsidy dies -- but wait ...
    3. Tarnished silver living: Short sales rise

    5. Vote on the top story of 2011
    6. Cast your vote for the year's weirdest science
    7. Bad economy means poor poor auto maintenance?

A number of events are planned that Sunday, although it remained unclear Thursday which Giffords will attend or whether she will make any public statements.

Other survivors of the shooting, including Giffords' staffers Ron Barber and Pam Simon, plan on going to every event that they can. Others, like 76-year-old survivor Mavy Stoddard ? whose husband died shielding her from bullets ? plan on staying home with loved ones who will help them get through the emotional day.

"The whole weekend of the anniversary, I think is going to be tough," Barber said recently during an interview in Giffords' Tucson office.

Barber was shot in the cheek and thigh during the shooting, which killed six and injured 13, including Giffords. The congresswoman survived a gunshot wound to the head and has been undergoing extensive physical and speech therapy in Houston for the past year.

Barber still walks with a cane, meets with a therapist and is working on a part-time basis because of fatigue.

Barber has been reliving the terrible moments of the shooting in nightmares and flashbacks as he helps plan events marking the day, which he envisions as a time of togetherness and healing for Tucson.

"This wasn't just an emotional wound for those of us who were there, but our entire community was shocked ? a lot of people still cry when they see me," Barber said. "We're bringing the community together in a way that they came together (after the shooting)."

In the weeks following the tragedy, Tucson residents turned out in droves to contribute to memorials at Giffords' office, the hospital where survivors were treated and in front of the grocery store where the shooting happened. All of the people wounded that day say that their neighbors brought them food that kept them fed for two months.

"This community really rallied around itself and us," Barber said. "And I know the congresswoman wants to be here to be a part of that."

Simon said she feels a responsibility to go to all the events planned Jan. 8, partially because her colleague and friend Gabe Zimmerman and others who were there for Giffords that day were killed.

"I've felt this way from moment one, since I was one of the staff members that could be there, although it's emotionally tough sometimes," she said. "But people got wounded when they came to see Gabby, and as one of her staff it's very, very important for me to be there for the community. It's a privilege and an honor."

The events planned include a community-wide ringing of bells at churches and by people throughout the city at 10:11 a.m., the exact time the shooting broke out, an interfaith service at St. Augustine Cathedral where people of all religions are invited to pray and reflect, and a series of talks reflecting the lives of Giffords and the six people killed in the shooting.

During the talks, being held on the University of Arizona campus, Colorado Sen. Mark Udall will speak about Giffords.

Other speakers include federal Judge Raner Collins speaking for shooting victim and fellow Judge John Roll, Barber speaking for Mavy Stoddard's husband Dory, and Serenity Hammerich, who will talk about her best friend and the youngest shooting victim, 9-year-old Christina-Taylor Green.

Capping off the events will be a candlelight vigil at the university.

Stoddard said that she won't be able to go to any of the events because they'll be too emotional.

Stoddard has had a particularly tough time coping with the loss of her husband and "soul mate" of 15 years during the holidays. The two were grade-school sweethearts who married when they were 60 years old after each of their spouses died; they spent the next 15 years traveling the world and building a home together in Tucson.

"I'm glad the town is turning out to remember but I'd rather just be with my family," she said. "I think that's what Dory would want, to have us all together and love one another."

No. 3 Kentucky, No. 4 Louisville renew rivalry (AP)

LEXINGTON, Ky. ? Kentucky coach John Calipari began a list when he was asked whether he and Louisville coach Rick Pitino are too much alike to get along.

"Similarities? We've both taken three teams to the Final Four, we both got fired in the NBA and we're Italians with big noses," Calipari said Friday. "I respect what he's done, respect the program, respect the city and the school."

No. 3 Kentucky (12-1) and No. 4 Louisville (12-1) renew their rivalry in the most anticipated yearly game in the Commonwealth on Saturday at Rupp Arena, where even the smallest details are scrutinized.

So when a video came out this month showing Calipari and Pitino chatting at a high school game in Mount Washington, Ky., there was an abundance of speculation about just what the two coaches discussed.

"We don't send Christmas cards, but we're cordial to each other," Calipari said. "I went up to him, talked to him, told him he's doing a fabulous job with his team, the way they're playing, blah, blah, blah. And he said, `Your team's really good and dah, dah, dah.' OK?

"He said `I hope we beat you' and I said `I hope we beat you' and I went and got a Diet Coke. That was about it. I don't know what to tell you."

The rivalry is as much about the two rabid fan bases as it is the players.

Between the two schools, 13 players have never participated in a Kentucky-Louisville game. This time, the schools have the highest combined ranking in series history. But Kentucky freshman Anthony Davis said he's recognized the passion simply by the amount of tweets he's received from fans about beating Louisville.

"We guess it's a big deal for them," Davis said.

Davis hears even more back and forth about what fans think of the respective leaders of the program.

"(They think) that they hate each other. One always goes out and parties when the other one loses," Davis said. "They look alike, but coach Pitino, I've never seen him coach so I can't say how they remind me of each other."

Only one side will have a reason to celebrate on Saturday night even though Calipari insisted he has no ill-feelings toward Pitino, saying any perceived friction comes from proximity.

"It's two different programs and two different leagues. We're not really recruiting against each other. It's just this one time and our fans are going to be happy or their fans are going to be happy, and that's it," Calipari said. "As far as our team, I'm telling you we respect them. Our players do not have animosity or hatred."

Louisville has been quiet since its 20-game home winning streak was snapped in a 71-68 loss to No. 12 Georgetown on Wednesday night. The Cardinals did not have any media availability ahead of this game and have lost the last two in the series.

"I think Kentucky is the better basketball team right now," Pitino said after the loss to the Hoyas. "Running up and down and trying to outscore Kentucky would be a futile attempt to try to get a `W'."

Kentucky is led by Doron Lamb, averaging 15.8 points, and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, who is chipping in 13.5 points. Davis is averaging a double-double with 11.6 points and 10.2 rebounds.

"We know they're just as athletic, we know they're a good team, too," Kentucky senior Darius Miller said. "We can't come in thinking that we're more athletic or we're the better team. We've got to come in and play."

Louisville guard Chris Smith measured it in NBA talent.

"Every guy on their team is, I guess, a pro," Smith said. "A win Saturday would come back and erase the sting, but at the same time we're 0-1 in the Big East. We just have to keep our composure and win the game on Saturday."

It certainly won't be easy. Kentucky has the nation's longest home winning streak at 43 games and hasn't lost since Calipari came to Lexington in 2009.

"It's a very hard place to play," said Louisville forward Kyle Kuric, who is averaging 13.5 points. "I'll just leave it at that."

But Miller, who grew up in Maysville, Ky., said he's expecting some wrinkles from the Cardinals, who'll need point guard Peyton Siva to get into the lane often to cause problems for the Wildcats.

"We know they are a very physical team," Miller said. "They play with a lot of intensity and we've got to match that. We've got to make them try to match our intensity and how tough we play."

Louisville freshman Chane Behanan said he's prepared for whatever happens in his first foray against the Wildcats.

"When I moved to Kentucky, I got the feel for it and understanding of it," Behanan said. "It's serious, real serious."

Lawrence O?Donnell Compares GOP Candidates To Porn Producers

VIDEO

Thursday night, Lawrence O?Donnell brought up a Los Angeles primary ballot measure ? a possible law that would require porn stars to wear condoms while filming in Los Angeles ? and found a way to work in the GOP field of candidates, suggesting that the two groups were similar in not wanting to be burdened with any more regulations.

O?Donnell introduced the segment by using the brilliant segue of Newt GIngrich?s inability to get the 10,000 signatures required to get on the Virginia primary ballot. He noted that the measure that would require actors in porn to wear condoms while filming in the city of Los Angeles had collected 70,000.

?There is no clearer measure of the depths that the Gingrich campaign has sunk to than the fact that there are more people who want to protect the health of porn stars than there are people in the entire state of Virginia who want the chance to vote for Newt Gingrich for President.?

O?Donnell then said that ? if the field has at least two candidates by the time the California primary comes around and there is a debate ? the first question he wants to hear asked is, ?Are you in favor of porn stars being required to wear condoms?? O?Donnell considers it a trick question, saying that, to a GOP candidate, it?s a choice between being anti-tax and pro-porn producer.

The measure would collect a fee from the porn productions and create a job of ?porn set condom inspector,? O?Donnell reported. He imagined that while Ron Paul would be vehemently opposed to this, the rest of the field might be torn. ?Do they stand side by side with porn producers?? O?Donnell asked, then added:

?The only people who hate regulation even a little bit more than Republican presidential candidates are porn producers.?

NBA Roundup: New Jersey falls hard in final home opener

Marvin Williams had 14 points and nine rebounds and the Atlanta Hawks opened a double-digit lead early and cruised to a 106-70 victory against the sluggish New Jersey Nets on Tuesday night in their final home opener at the Prudential Center in Newark, N.J.

Jeff Teague added 13 points, Joe Johnson had 11 and the Hawks got big games off the bench from Zaza Pachulia (13 points and 11 rebounds) and Vladimir Radmanovic (17 points) in finally opening the lockout-delayed season by embarrassing the Nets in a game in which the crowd was booing the Brooklyn-bound team by halftime.

Entering Tuesday, only Atlanta and Utah had not played a game.

Rookie MarShon Brooks had 17 points to lead the cold-shooting Nets, who looked tired coming off a season-opening win Monday in Washington.

The Hawks, who held the Nets to a dismal 31 percent shooting from the field, took command early as Williams hit two 3-pointers in a game-opening 11-2 spurt.

Atlanta led 28-11 at the end of the first quarter with Radmanovic supplying a late spark with nine points.

Atlanta, which has made the playoffs the past four seasons, was not overly impressive.

It shot 44.2 percent from the field and only showed flashes of good basketball.

The best came early in the second half when Williams and Josh Smith combined on a fastbreak in which the ball did not touch the floor and they exchanged four passes before Smith hit a layup.

The Hawks increased their lead to 22 points at halftime on a long 3-pointer by Teague with less than a second to play.

They led by as many as 39 points while resting most of the their starters for the final 18 minutes.

Hawks guard Willie Green played in his 500th game.

The Hawks had lost in their previous two visits to New Jersey.

The Nets, who never led in the game, also gave up early, sitting Deron Williams and Kris Humphries most of the second half.

Deron Williams finished with 10 points on 3 of 11 shooting with six turnovers, while Humphries had 11 points and six rebounds.

The most shocking part of the night was the cheers that Humphries got.

He has been booed early in the preseason because of his embarrassing failed marriage to Kim Kardashian.

He was wildly cheered by the fans at the Prudential Center.

When he played well early, there were even cheers of "We love Humphries!"

Trans-Canada Fitness resolutions resolved

The second offering of Trans-Canada Fitness?s Ultimate Loser competition helped dozens of participants get healthy and shed weight ? all for a good cause. Cooper?s Foods matched donations of $1 per pound lost to the contest, and also donated $1 per pound lost to the Revelstoke Food Bank. JR Powell came in first with the biggest percentage of body weight lost over the 13-week program, totalling 45 pounds. ?[Trans-Canada Fitness?s Neil Jones] goes above and beyond to help you,? Powell told the Times Review. ?It?s a new lease on life; a world of difference for everybody,? he said of the group. Jones said he?ll be offering the three-month program once again in February, but that?s it for the year. Pictured here from left: Trans-Canada Fitness?s Neil Jones, co-organizer Tanya Secord, Joe Mele of Cooper?s Foods Revelstoke, JR Powell (1st with 45 pound loss), Teresa Flick (2nd with 24 pounds lost) and Joanne Short (3rd with 19 pounds lost).

Tour offers visitors a special screening of New Orleans (Reuters)

NEW ORLEANS (Reuters) ? It's been more than 50 years since Blanche DuBois of the New Orleans-set play "A Streetcar Named Desire" wistfully declared that she had "always depended on the kindness of strangers."

Now, a local tour service brings strangers close to settings where the lives of DuBois and later fictional characters, such as Benjamin Button (portrayed by Brad Pitt) and "GI Joe" Colton (Bruce Willis), played out in dramatic style.

New Orleans Movie Tours owner Jonathan Ray personally escorts visitors to film locations and other movie-related spots. Sites related to 30 movies are now on the tour, he said.

"I want to be able to answer every question about every movie ever filmed here," Ray told Reuters.

He and his wife Michelle began the tours seven months ago with the idea of giving visitors a cameraman's view of New Orleans by highlighting its history as a filming location.

Twice a day, Jonathan Ray drives as many as 10 passengers around the city in a van equipped with individual video monitors.

At each location along the two-hour route, Ray shows clips from a movie or TV episode filmed at the site and offers anecdotes related to the location.

They visit a spot near the foot of Canal Street as they watch video of Vivien Leigh, starring in the 1951 film version of "Streetcar," stepping off a train and asking directions to a street called Elysian Fields.

When a scene from the 1991 movie "JFK" pops onto the screen, showing Kevin Costner's character in the French Quarter bar called Napoleon House, tour guests get to see the bar up close.

"We'll show you that clip while parked right outside the Napoleon House, and then we'll tell you about the history of the building, too," Ray said.

Guests, who pay $39 for the tour, also get popcorn and bottled water.

Ray, who worked behind the scenes on several locally-shot feature films, spent much of the last two years researching local movie history and amassing details about more than 100 classic and contemporary New Orleans-related productions, from the 1958 Elvis Presley movie "King Creole" to "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" (2008).

PRODUCTION HOTBED

Keeping up with local movie trivia is a growing challenge in a city that's become a hotbed of movie production.

Since 2002, when Louisiana implemented a tax credit program that gives producers financial breaks in exchange for making movies in the state, New Orleans has become one of the largest film centers in the country outside of Los Angeles.

Some 90 feature films and television productions came to Louisiana during 2011, according to the state's Department of Economic Development. New Orleans hosted more than half of those projects.

The industry's growth here has increased the chances a visitor wandering along local streets might bump into a screen idol such as Brad Pitt or Sandra Bullock, who own homes in the city, or Nicolas Cage, Samuel L. Jackson, Nicole Kidman, Sylvester Stallone and a host of other stars who have worked here.

Guests on Ray's tour last week caught sight of Will Ferrell and Dylan McDermott as the van visited a location for "Dog Fight," a comedy slated for release in 2012.

Cris Roman, a recent visitor from Sauk Centre, Minnesota, said New Orleans Movie Tours gave him an insider's view of one of his favorite TV shows, the HBO series "Treme."

Now in production on its third season, the series uses sets throughout the city, including the series' namesake neighborhood just north of the historic French Quarter.

"I loved seeing the Treme neighborhood," Roman said. "And the fact that Jonathan would screen clips in the bus while driving by the locations -- I haven't taken a tour like that before."

Local tourism officials welcome the movie tours as an extension of the local film business, which they count among the city's growing visitor assets.

"When a tourist comes to the city and sees Matthew McConaughey or Jessica Alba, it supports the idea that New Orleans is an exciting place to be," said Jennifer Day-Sully, a spokeswoman for the New Orleans Convention & Visitors Bureau.

Video: Android 4.0 Hacked Onto The Kindle Fire

Screen Shot 2011-12-26 at 6.33.41 PMYou wanted an Android tablet for Christmas... and you got one! Alas, it's a Kindle Fire. Whoops! While the Fire is technically well within the realm of "Android tablet" (and a mighty fine tablet, for the price), it's not quite the tried-and-true vanilla Android experience you were looking for. Wait! Don't go requesting that return label just yet: if a gang of goodhearted hackers have their way, Amazon's wonderfully wallet-friendly tablet will be running the latest builds of straight-up Android (as in Ice Cream Sandwich) before too long. In fact, they've (sort of) already got it working.

Paul: ?Hamas was encouraged and really started by Israel?

posted at 1:40 pm on December 27, 2011 by Ed Morrissey

Not long ago, Newt Gingrich got into some trouble for claiming that the Palestinians are an ?invented people,? although there is some basis for that statement, as prior to the British Mandate there was no such official designation for ?Palestine? ? and the British clearly included present-day Jordan as a major part of ?Palestine? in the mandate. Another Republican candidate offered a history lesson on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in 2009, a moment recalled by Jeff Dunetz in this clip from the House floor. In it, we discover that Israel ?started? Hamas as a counterweight to Yasser Arafat, or something, and manages to blame the CIA for radicalizing Muslims and the US for supplying weapons and funds that ?kill Palestinians?:

This may be why Paul doesn?t get a lot of support from his own party in Iowa or New Hampshire, as Byron York reports today:

In a hotly-contested Republican race, it appears that only about half of Paul?s supporters are Republicans. In Iowa, according to Rasmussen, just 51 percent of Paul supporters consider themselves Republicans. In New Hampshire, the number is 56 percent, according to Andrew Smith, head of the University of New Hampshire poll.

The same New Hampshire survey found that 87 percent of the people who support Romney consider themselves Republicans. For Newt Gingrich, it?s 85 percent.

So who is supporting Paul? In New Hampshire, Paul is the choice of just 13 percent of Republicans, according to the new poll, while he is the favorite of 36 percent of independents and 26 percent of Democrats who intend to vote in the primary. Paul leads in both non-Republican categories.

?Paul is doing the best job of getting those people who aren?t really Republicans but say they?re going to vote in the Republican primary,? explains Smith. Among that group are libertarians, dissatisfied independents and Democrats who are ?trying to throw a monkey wrench in the campaign by voting for someone who is more philosophically extreme,? says Smith.

So who started Hamas?? Was it really Israel?? Er ? no, not really, and the suggestion that Israel wanted Hamas as a counterweight to the PLO is simply ludicrous.? Hamas developed from a network of Muslim Brotherhood charities in Gaza in the mid-1980s.? The Muslim Brotherhood was one of the most notorious of anti-Israeli organizations in the region, formed in the 1920s in opposition to the collapse of the Caliphate and the British Mandate that followed. At the founding of Hamas, it called for ?jihad? to seize Israel and create an Islamist state from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea. ?? They formed in direct opposition to the PLO (now called Fatah in the Palestinian Authority government), to some extent because Yasser Arafat was negotiating with Israel, albeit in bad faith while trying to drum up financial and political support in the West. Hamas gets its funding from Iran, hardly a disinterested third party in this conflict ? and the main engine of radicalizing Muslims, eclipsing the Muslim Brotherhood ever since the Iranian revolution of 1979.

Paul only gets one thing substantially correct in this speech, which is that the US screwed up by pushing for an election in Gaza while Hamas had such a strong hold on the territory.? We did warn, however, that we would not work with terrorists in a Gaza government, and after the unilateral Israeli withdrawal in 2005 it would have been difficult to argue against elections in Gaza.? ?Imposing? democracy in this case ended up backfiring, as it legitimized Hamas to some extent and made it more difficult to fight against their terrorism.? But that?s a far cry from claiming that Israel started Hamas, a statement that is so nutty that it should be by itself disqualifying for voters looking to select the next Republican nominee.

Update: A few people have e-mailed me this opinion piece from the WSJ in 2009 as ?proof? that corroborates Paul?s claims. ?It doesn?t back up Paul?s claim that Israel ?started? Hamas, and it really doesn?t make the case that Israel encouraged the formation of Hamas, either. ?The closest it comes is this:

?Hamas, to my great regret, is Israel?s creation,? says Mr. Cohen, a Tunisian-born Jew who worked in Gaza for more than two decades. Responsible for religious affairs in the region until 1994, Mr. Cohen watched the Islamist movement take shape, muscle aside secular Palestinian rivals and then morph into what is today Hamas, a militant group that is sworn to Israel?s destruction.

Instead of trying to curb Gaza?s Islamists from the outset, says Mr. Cohen, Israel for years tolerated and, in some cases, encouraged them as a counterweight to the secular nationalists of the Palestine Liberation Organization and its dominant faction, Yasser Arafat?s Fatah. Israel cooperated with a crippled, half-blind cleric named Sheikh Ahmed Yassin, even as he was laying the foundations for what would become Hamas. Sheikh Yassin continues to inspire militants today; during the recent war in Gaza, Hamas fighters confronted Israeli troops with ?Yassins,? primitive rocket-propelled grenades named in honor of the cleric.

How did Israel ?encourage? Hamas? ?By keeping tabs on it, as any intel service would have done:

Instead, Israel?s military-led administration in Gaza looked favorably on the paraplegic cleric, who set up a wide network of schools, clinics, a library and kindergartens. Sheikh Yassin formed the Islamist group Mujama al-Islamiya, which was officially recognized by Israel as a charity and then, in 1979, as an association. Israel also endorsed the establishment of the Islamic University of Gaza, which it now regards as a hotbed of militancy. The university was one of the first targets hit by Israeli warplanes in the recent war.

Brig. General Yosef Kastel, Gaza?s Israeli governor at the time, is too ill to comment, says his wife. But Brig. Gen. Yitzhak Segev, who took over as governor in Gaza in late 1979, says he had no illusions about Sheikh Yassin?s long-term intentions or the perils of political Islam. As Israel?s former military attache in Iran, he?d watched Islamic fervor topple the Shah. However, in Gaza, says Mr. Segev, ?our main enemy was Fatah,? and the cleric ?was still 100% peaceful? towards Israel. Former officials say Israel was also at the time wary of being viewed as an enemy of Islam.

Mr. Segev says he had regular contact with Sheikh Yassin, in part to keep an eye on him. He visited his mosque and met the cleric around a dozen times. It was illegal at the time for Israelis to meet anyone from the PLO. Mr. Segev later arranged for the cleric to be taken to Israel for hospital treatment. ?We had no problems with him,? he says.

In other words, people want to ?credit? Israel for creating Hamas because they didn?t oppose the establishment of (then) non-violent social charities. ?Later, in 1987, the Muslim Brotherhood formed these charities into Hamas, which adopted violent jihad?and the destruction of Israel as the key goals of its charter. ?Israel didn?t stop it and continued for a brief time to maintain its contacts with the group until it launched an intifada, but that?s not the same thing as ?creating Hamas,? or even ?encouraging Hamas.?

Here?s the entire statement made on January 9th, 2009, from the Congressional Record:

Madam Speaker, I rise in opposition to this resolution, not because I am taking sides and picking who the bad guys are and who the good guys are, but I?m looking at this more from the angle of being a United States citizen, an American, and I think resolutions like this really do great harm to us. In many ways what is happening in the Middle East, and in particular with Gaza right now, we have some moral responsibility for both sides, because we provide help in funding for both Arab nations and Israel. And so we definitely have a moral responsibility. And especially now today, the weapons being used to kill so many Palestinians are American weapons and American funds essentially are being used for this.

But there is a political liability which I think is something that we fail to look at because too often there is so much blowback from our intervention in areas that we shouldn?t be involved in. Hamas, if you look at the history, you will find that Hamas was encouraged and actually started by Israel because they wanted Hamas to counteract Yasir Arafat. You say, Well, yeah, it was better then and served its purpose, but we didn?t want Hamas to do this. So then we, as Americans, say, Well, we have such a good system;
we?re going to impose this on the world. We?re going to invade Iraq and teach people how to be democrats. We want free elections. So we encouraged the Palestinians to have a free election. They do, and they elect Hamas.

So we first, indirectly and directly through Israel, helped establish Hamas. Then we have an election where Hamas becomes dominant then we have to kill them. It just doesn?t make sense. During the 1980s, we were allied with Osama bin Laden and we were contending with the Soviets. It was at that time our CIA thought it was good if we radicalize the Muslim world. So we finance the Madrassas school to radicalize the Muslims in order to compete with the Soviets. There is too much blowback.

There are a lot of reasons why we should oppose this resolution. It?s not in the interest of the United States, it is not in the interest of Israel either. I strongly oppose H. Res. 34, which was rushed to the floor with almost no prior notice and without consideration by the House Foreign Affairs Committee. The resolution clearly takes one side in a conflict that has nothing to do with the United States or U.S. interests. I am concerned that the weapons currently being used by Israel against the Palestinians in Gaza are made in America and paid for by American taxpayers. What will adopting this resolution do to the perception of the United States in the Muslim and Arab world? What kind of blowback
might we see from this? What moral responsibility do we have for the violence in Israel and Gaza after having provided so much military support to one side?

As an opponent of all violence, I am appalled by the practice of lobbing homemade rockets into Israel from Gaza. I am only grateful that, because of the primitive nature of these weapons, there have been so few casualties among innocent Israelis. But I am also appalled by the longstanding Israeli blockade of Gaza?a cruel act of war?and the tremendous loss of life that has resulted from the latest Israeli attack that started last month. There are now an estimated 700 dead Palestinians, most of whom are civilians. Many innocent children are among the dead. While the shooting of rockets into Israel is inexcusable, the violent actions of some people in Gaza does not justify killing Palestinians on this scale. Such collective punishment is immoral. At the very least, the U.S. Congress should not be loudly proclaiming its support for the Israeli government?s actions in Gaza.

Madam Speaker, this resolution will do nothing to reduce the fighting and bloodshed in the Middle East. The resolution in fact will lead the U.S. to become further involved in this conflict, promising ?vigorous support and unwavering commitment to the welfare, security, and survival of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state.? Is it really in the interest of the United States to guarantee the survival of any foreign country? I believe it would be better to focus on the security and survival of the United States, the Constitution of which my colleagues and I swore to defend just this week at the beginning of the 111th Congress. I urge my colleagues to reject this resolution.

Iranian woman to face death by stoning or hanging (AP)

TEHRAN, Iran ? Authorities in Iran said Sunday they are again moving ahead with plans to execute a woman sentenced to death by stoning on an adultery conviction in a case that sparked an international outcry, but are considering whether to carry out the punishment by hanging instead.

Sakineh Mohammadi Ashtiani is already behind bars, serving a 10-year sentence on a separate conviction in the murder of her husband. Amid the international outrage her case generated, Iran in July 2010 suspended plans to carry out her death sentence on the adultery conviction.

On Sunday, a senior judiciary official said experts were studying whether the punishment of stoning could be changed to hanging.

"There is no haste. ... We are waiting to see whether we can carry out the execution of a person sentenced to stoning by hanging or not," said Malek Ajdar Sharifi, the head of justice department of East Azerbaijan province, where Ashtiani is jailed.

"As soon as the result (of the investigation) is obtained, we will carry out the sentence," he said, according to the semi-official ISNA news agency.

The charge of a married woman having an illicit relationship requires a punishment of stoning, he said.

He said judiciary chief Ayatollah Sadeq Larijani ordered a halt to stoning in order to allow Islamic experts to investigate whether the punishment can be altered in Ashtiani's case.

Ashtiani was convicted of adultery in 2006 after the murder of her husband.

She was later convicted of being an accessory to her husband's murder and sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Pistons get under way with new owner, new coach, new attitude

Auburn Hills ? Absurdity. Buffoonery. Chicanery.

If there were ABCs to last year's version of the Pistons, those would be among the key words.

Everything that could've gone wrong did. A 30-52 season included 10 losing streaks of at least three games, and players organized a mutiny against coach John Kuester. The season turned from disappointing to embarrassing.

The team was for sale, with an owner who essentially halted any significant transactions, and was led by a coach who in hindsight was ill-prepared to lead a disparate group of players.

Franchise mainstay Richard Hamilton was going through what seemed to be a 12-step divorce process that bordered on something you'd see on "The Young and the Restless" instead of on a team with a championship tradition. It was encapsulated by the player boycott in February, when half the team didn't bother to show up for shoot-around in Philadelphia.

If those were the Pistons' darkest days, the 2011-12 season marks the dawn of a new era. Owner Tom Gores, coach Lawrence Frank and first-round draft pick Brandon Knight hope to be the first pieces of the Pistons' third glorious era ? and they're starting from ground zero.

Gores is bringing an energy the team has lacked, and has been quick to put his stamp on the franchise by putting his money where his mouth is, devoting millions into revitalizing The Palace's facilities and hiring Dennis Mannion to run the entertainment endeavors.

Although Gores is a novice NBA executive, Pistons president Joe Dumars said Gores is engaged and has been nothing but helpful in the early stages of their relationship.

"We're going to lean on him," Gores said of Dumars at the owner's introductory news conference in June. "He knows basketball, and we're going to push (him) and push hard."

As an example that Gores will be much more than an absentee owner, Hamilton's contract was bought out, removing a black cloud of uncertainty.

Frank has taken the reins from Kuester and is in the long process of de-programming the bad habits the team developed in recent years, vowing to return the Pistons to their hard-working roots. He's spoken openly about "getting the fans back" and turning The Palace into the house of horrors for opponents it was once known as during the Pistons' successful run that ended a few seasons ago.

"We have to earn it; it's on us to bring the fans back," Frank said. "We have to give them a reason. We have to put forth a maximum effort to do that.

"When Tom hired me, he said it's not enough to win a championship. You have to be impactful, to impact the lives of people in and around the city."

When the lockout was over, Frank spent time with each individual player, letting them know the slate was wiped clean from last season's drama.

"He holds people accountable," guard Rodney Stuckey said of Frank. "He tells it like it is. He teaches every single one of us. It's very constructive."

Dumars himself seems to be rejuvenated, finally getting the support he's wanted but never spoke publicly about over the past few seasons.

Gores and his people like Dumars because he's not resting on his laurels as a player or executive, even though he's arguably the most accomplished local sports figure of the past 25 years. Now he has the task of rebuilding a team that has been hit by ownership neglect. He has a plan, and now he can actually go about implementing it.

Bringing back free agents Stuckey and Tayshaun Prince surprised most fans. It was expected the Pistons would distance themselves from last season's issues. But with those signings, Dumars demonstrated he believes the stench of losing can unfairly affect a player's worth and public perception.

"'Move on' doesn't mean you throw the baby out with the bath water," said Dumars after Prince's signing was announced. "You can't just get rid of everybody."

A crucial step was hiring Frank, an experienced coach with a self-deprecating personality but also a chip on his shoulder. He wants results but he's ready to be patient with the process, too.

"You don't want this to be a circus; you can't be changing every day," Frank said.

And finally, Knight represents what the fans will hold onto as the biggest sign of hope ? someone who can step right in and produce.

Knight arrived from Kentucky as a big-game player, and after his surprising fall from the top of the lottery, he surely has a chip on his shoulder similar to Frank's.

"No matter what sport you're playing, you always want to win," Knight said. "You have to make sure that you're lifting the team up, picking guys up, being a great teammate."

The bottom line is getting to the playoffs, which this team plans on doing after a two-year sabbatical. Frank said it starts with a superior defensive effort.

"What history shows is if you're a high-level defensive team, it gives you the best chance to play in the postseason," he said. "That's our goal."

Then possibly, the ABCs that will become synonymous with Pistons basketball will be more flattering.

Can California meet its lofty energy goals?

By the year 2020, legislation requires that 33% of the California's power come from renewable sources, such as wind and solar. Can it be done?

Today, California's electricity is mainly generated using natural gas. ?By the year 2020, AB32 legislation requires that 33% of the state's power come from renewables such as wind and solar. ?This is the renewable portfolio standard (RPS). ?For years, I have wondered what will be the cost of achieving this ambitious goal.

Skip to next paragraph Matthew Kahn

Mathew is an economics professor at UCLA and has written three books: Green Cities (Brookings Institution Press); Heroes and Cowards (Princeton University Press, jointly with Dora L. Costa); and in fall 2010, Climatopolis: How Our Cities Will Thrive in the Hotter World (Basic Books).

Recent posts

?In recent days, the CEC has released documents from a recent conference on the RPS. ?As usual, I see lots of talented engineers presenting stuff but unless I'm mistaken I don't see any economic analysis. ?Is that puzzling? ?Why should economists be involved? ? I would think that economists could model the likely impact on electricity pricing from substituting to renewables. ?I would think that residential, industrial and commercial consumers will care about such a prediction. ?In terms of formal economics, what does the state's supply curve for power look like? ?How binding a constraint is the 33% RPS? ?In english, what would be the price per kWh if we continue to use natural gas as the energy source versus what would the price be under the 33% RPS? ?For an optimistic opinion on this issue read this.

From an economic science point of view, this big green push offers an excellent test of the "learning by doing" hypothesis. ?Does the average cost per kWh of renewable power decline with more cumulative production? ?As the industry matures, is there more investment in renewables? ?Is Adam Smith's pin factory of specialization taking place here? ?

Also don't forget about international trade and globalization. ?As the United States imports renewables equipment from India and China, our costs of installing such completed systems decline. ?MIT's Technology Review has published a nice piece on this. For some facts about recent international trade patterns, read my paper joint with Aparna Sawhney.
Here is our sexy abstract:

We track US imports of advanced technology wind and solar power-generation equipment from a panel of countries during 1989-2010, and examine the determining factors including sector-specific US FDI outflow, country size, and domestic wind and solar power generation. Differentiating between the core high-tech and the balance of system equipment, we find US imports of the both categories have grown at significantly higher rate from the relatively poorer countries, particularly China and India. US FDI is found to play a significant positive role in the exports of high-tech equipment from both rich and poor countries, especially for the balance of system equipment. For the core wind and solar equipment, we find domestic renewable power generation played a significant positive role, and the effect is more pronounced for the rich countries as well as China compared to other poor countries.

and here is a well written paragraph from the paper's introduction:

There is a certain irony that trade with developing countries is accelerating the development of the ?green economy?.? The trade and environment literature has studied the conditions such that poor nations would be pollution havens for rich countries as dirty factories could escape tight regulation in rich countries by re-locating to poorer nations (Copeland and Taylor 2003, 2004). ??This literature emphasizes that the location of dirty economic activity will be determined by both factor endowments and regulatory intensity.?? In the case of ?green energy? trade, the poorer South is emerging as a key provider of cheap equipment for renewable-power generation to the rich North for its production and consumption of clean energy.? If clean energy prices decline then they are more likely to induce a composition shift as nations choose to substitute them for fossil fuel generated electricity (i.e coal and natural gas). ??Such a composition shift could significantly reduce national greenhouse gas emissions associated with power generation.? ?

I hope you agree that I should teach less so that I can devote more time to writing such witty prose?
On an unrelated note, I will soon be in Berkeley, CA to restore my liberal/green street credibility. ?If you want to see me, look for me at Strada.

Bambi on ice rescued from frozen lake in Canada

Three intrepid men set out to save a deer stranded on a frozen lake in Ontario, Canada.

Two rescuers and a cameraman went to the aid of the deer after it became stuck on the frozen waters at Black Sturgeon Lake in Kenora, southern Canada. Equipped only with iceskates and a makeshift harness the amateur rescue team tried to drag the stranded creature back to land.

YouTube link.

Initial attempts to harness the wild animal were frustrated as it twitched and wriggled free. But persistence paid off and the team finally managed to secure the strap under the deer's front legs and slide it back to safety.

The exhausted four-legged creature required a final push from the cameraman to get it up the bank, meaning that the final scenes of the rescue were not captured. The cameraman reassures viewers of the happy ending: "The deer is great! She ran off a day after resting on the shore to gain her strength."

iMAME emulation app hits the App Store, humanity cheers in unison

No interest in snapping up an iCade? No sweat. Jim VanDeventer has just pushed today's app-to-end-all-apps into Apple's App Store, and while it's only been live for a few hours, iMAME is already on a mission to change the world. Built-in titles include Circus, Crash, Hard Hat, Fire One, Robot Bowl, Side Track, Spectar, Star Fire and Targ, and while it's not officially endorsed by Nicola Salmoria or the MAME Team, you can certainly pretend. It's available now in the source link for precisely nothing, and yes, both the iPhone and iPad (and iPod touch!) are supported. Get it while the gettin' is good.

[Thanks, Gary]

Rhapsody soars past a million paying customers, president Jon Irwin shaves his head in celebration

Whatever Spotify can do, Rhapsody can do better? Not quite, but it's getting there. While the former cruised past 2.5 million paying customers last month, Rhapsody has just announced that it has "gone platnium." It's now serving a cool million paying subscribers, right on the heels of its ten-year anniversary. The company's delivering around ten million songs per day, while making itself available on over 60 devices. What's next? Well, president Jon Irwin has to grow his locks back (seriously!), and we're guessing it'll try to lock down a few more carrier partnerships as the months drag on. When pinged for comment, Billy Corgan said: "I'm on vacation."

Storms move across Georgia; tornado watch issued

ATLANTA (AP) -- Strong storms moved through Georgia Thursday evening, and emergency dispatchers reported damage in the Rome area, Gordon County and elsewhere, mostly in northwest Georgia.

Georgia Power estimated that more than 19,000 customers lost electricity early Thursday evening.

Power was reported out in much of west Rome.

Georgia Power spokeswoman Carol Boatright said about two-thirds of the outages in the state were in the Rome area. "Our crews are used to working in bad weather, and they'll be out there working this evening," she said.

Damage in Floyd County "seems to be the result of straight line winds and confined to an area of West Rome, mostly businesses reporting windows blown out," Ken Davis of the Georgia Emergency Management Agency said in a statement.

There were two reported minor injuries in Rome, caused by cuts from flying glass, Davis said.

Davis said utility crews were en route to restore lost power in the area.

A rehab center, described by Davis as a place to get a warm drink and out of the weather, was being established at Westminster Presbyterian Church.

Gordon County reported a couple of homes with damages ranging from major to being destroyed by straight line winds, and some minor injuries. Some power outages were reported in Gordon county, Davis said.

In Adairsville in Bartow County, the National Weather Service said many trees were down and homes were damaged.

Emergency management officials said numerous trees were down in southern Gilmer County.

Trees were reported down in Polk, Meriwether and Douglas counties.

Power lines were reported down in Coweta County.

Finnish govt sees possible recession (AP)

HELSINKI ? Finland could hit recession early next year, the Finance Ministry said Tuesday, as it slashed forecasts for economic growth in 2012 to 0.4 percent from an earlier predicted 1.8 percent.

The ministry predicted that growth in 2011 will be 2.6 percent and after a year of low demand and falling investments next year it should pick up again in 2013 and reach 1.7 percent.

The ministry's economic review warned that Finland might hit a recession at year-end or early 2012 unless growth in its main trading partners ? Russia, Sweden and Germany ? markedly improves.

"Growth in 2012 will depend almost entirely on domestic demand since exports will remain subdued in 2012," the review said. "Dwindling international and domestic demand is also reflected in investment demand. Private investment is projected to contract by 1.5 percent in 2012."

The government said it expects unemployment, at a three-year low of 6.2 percent in November, to gradually grow and top 8 percent next year. Inflation was predicted to fall slightly, to about 2.7 percent, in 2012.

After a good first half in 2011, the financial crisis in the eurozone began to affect the economy of the small Nordic country ? one of six eurozone members with a triple-A debt rating.

"The sense of uncertainty that began to take hold late in the summer, especially in the eurozone, is once again quickly feeding through into the real economy," the review said. "Since the early autumn, economic statistics have indicated a broadly based slowdown in activity both in Finland and across Europe."

The report also noted that Finland's public finances had deteriorated rapidly after the previous global economic crisis.

"With growth remaining sluggish and the economy possibly heading for recession, the state of public finances will again present a serious challenge," the ministry warned.

Last week, the Bank of Finland also predicted that economic growth would fall to 0.4 percent in 2012 and could be even lower if the euro debt crisis worsens.

Finland, a member of the 17-nation eurozone, has been a keen supporter of the European Union but earlier this year said it would demand guarantees or collateral in any future bailout packages for ailing eurozone partners.
